Every week, the forum gets the same handful of questions from people who are about to commission their first prototype or small production run. They are not looking for sales talk. They want to know how the work actually happens, what they need to bring, and where the process tends to stall. The first question is almost always about drawings. Clients ask whether a rough sketch is enough or if they need a full CAD model before they can get a quote. The honest answer is that a sketch gets the conversation started, but a dimensioned drawing or a simple STEP file removes most of the guesswork. If you do not have CAD experience, a clear photo with measurements written on it is often enough for a first pass. The key is to show the critical dimensions, the material you have in mind, and any tolerance that matters for how the part will be used.
The second question is about material. People want to know whether they should buy the stock themselves or let the workshop source it. There is no single right answer. If you already have a supplier and know the exact grade you need, bringing your own material can save money. If you are unsure about the difference between mild steel and tool steel, or between PETG and ABS, let the shop recommend something. They will also know what is actually available locally, which matters more than what a datasheet says.
Then comes the question about timelines. Clients often ask how long a single prototype takes, and the useful answer is not a number. It depends on the machine queue, whether the material is in stock, and how many revisions the design needs. What helps is to ask the shop which step usually takes the longest. For CNC work it is often the setup and fixturing, not the cutting itself. For welding it is the preparation and cleaning. Knowing where the time goes makes the wait easier to understand.
The last question is about what happens when something does not fit or does not work. A good workshop will tell you upfront how they handle rework and what counts as a new job. Ask about this before you commit, not after a part comes back with a bad fit. Most shops will fix a machining error at no charge, but a design change that requires new tooling is a different matter. Getting that distinction clear early saves a lot of frustration.
